Ōtautahi Automatic (2017) from Clara Wells on Vimeo.

Clara graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts at the start of 2015. Throughout her work, Clara is most concerned with motion as an artform, focusing on methods, surrealism and abstraction as a basis for her experimental, experiential motion art. Most recently Clara took up an in-gallery residency at CoCA as part of The Social’s contribution to Making Space. During this time Clara created the second and third animated works in a opportunistically building series under the working title X Auto. The first of this series, Parramatta Automatic, was created while on residency at the Parramatta Artist Studios at the start of 2017 where she developed a method of animation based on direct animation techniques and surrealist drawing methods. This work won a Merit Award at the 2017 Parkin Drawing Prize.
